Urinary Incontinence in Men: Causes and Treatment

Supervised by Dr. Haney who has over 20 years of professional experience, Renew Aesthetics enhances quality of life for hundreds of clients.

When you hear about urinary incontinence (UI), the main populations people know it affects are women and older age groups. However, it’s important that we talk about the fact that many men can also suffer from UI.

You may have had issues of leaking urine without knowing it or having urinary incontinence symptoms at night. There are factors that may cause UI in men and a couple types too.

Types of Urinary Incontinence in Men

Stress incontinence

This is when you may leak urine because of a certain action that puts pressure on the area such as sneezing, laughing, or coughing.

Urge incontinence

This kind of incontinence is an urge to go that is so strong that you don’t make it to the restroom in time. It might even happen with only a small amount of urine.

Overflow incontinence

This occurs when your bladder tells you when you need to go, but you don’t fully urinate. So later on, you may leak urine.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence in Men

Most of the time, incontinence in men is related to prostate issues or treatments. Some other lifestyle choices can exacerbate the issue, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs.
