The Best Treatments for Brown Spots & Aging Spots

As the years go by, you might notice more areas of discoloration, like brown spots or “age spots”, appear on your skin. While harmless to your health, they can cause you to feel self-conscious about the unevenness of your skin tone.

Where do these spots come from? Well, unfortunately, many of us weren’t aware of the dangers of prolonged UV exposure until later in life. This after we’d spent our teenage years oiling up to lie out in the sun for hours.

It turns out UV exposure and other environmental factors (e.g. smoking, air pollution, injuries) cause damage to the skin, usually seen as wrinkles, loose skin, and brown spots or hyperpigmentation. The good news? Treatments at Renew Aesthetics in Rogers, AR can minimize or even eliminate hyperpigmentation caused by these factors!

What types of hyperpigmentation exist?

Often, sun damage and other types of pigmentation, like those in the table below, occur in both the surface (epidermal) and deep (dermal) layers of the skin. Some occur in both, as the hyperpigmentation resulted in severe or long-term damage that affected both layers of skin.

Pigmentation Surface (Epidermal) Deep (Dermal)
Sun damage from prolonged UV exposure (freckles, brown spots) Yes Yes
Birthmarks  No Yes
Normal tan Yes No
Melasma (hormonal hyperpigmentation) Yes Yes
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH (from acne, burns) Yes Yes
Pitted or raised scars (from cuts, severe acne, surgery, etc.) Yes Yes

With this knowledge, we can recommend hyperpigmentation treatments at our Rogers office that will work best for you.

Quiz: Which hyperpigmentation treatment is best for you?

How we treat hyperpigmentation

VI Peel

Cellular turnover is a key process that the skin undergoes to shed dead or damaged skin on the epidermis. Until your mid-20s, your skin cell turnover rate is relatively quick—it doesn’t need much help beyond regular exfoliation. As you age, however, your cellular turnover slows and can cause the accumulation of hyperpigmentation.

Using a combination of skin-loving ingredients — Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA), Retinoic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Phenol, Vitamin C, and other minerals — our unique VI Peel promotes cellular turnover and overall skin rejuvenation. We can use a VI Peel to treat areas of discoloration on the face, chest, arms, back, and legs.

The treatment takes 20 to 45 minutes. Expect peeling to start 2 to 3 days following your VI Peel. Once the peeling subsides, you may notice minor improvements to the overall texture and evenness of your skin. However, full results take 4 to 6 weeks to appear. We highly recommend following through with your customized hyperpigmentation treatment plan to reap all the benefits!

We use the VI Peel to address:

  • Melasma
  • Sun damage
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Microdermabrasion

The idea of applying something with grit to the skin to remove outer layers of dead, damaged skin dates back thousands of years. Why has the idea survived this long? Because it works!

These days, microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure that uses a handheld device to gently “sand” the top layer of skin, revealing the untouched, fresh skin underneath. This gentle treatment is ideal for treating the signs of sun damage in the epidermis. After a series of treatments, our patients can’t believe how bright their skin shines! 🤩

Besides physically exfoliating away unhealthy skin cells, regular microdermabrasion treatments also prompt your body’s natural healing response. This causes your skin to repair itself after the “trauma,” which can result in firmer, smoother skin that’s healthier and more elastic.thicker, more elastic, and healthier skin.

We use microdermabrasion to address:

  • Epidermal sun damage
  • Dermal sun damage (over time)

HydraFacial™

This revolutionary medical-grade device offers hydradermabrasion in an amazing multi-step system. This leaves you feeling relaxed and pampered as your skin positively glows.. In fact, it’s an excellent treatment to maintain healthy skin overall!

There is no skin type or tone that cannot benefit from HydraFacials. It is one of the most universally skin-friendly treatments that exists. We can also tailor each treatment to the patient. If you have extra dehydrated skin, we’ll infuse deeply moisturizing products as part of your treatment. If you are suffering a breakout, we will use acne-fighting ingredients to calm even the most irritated skin.

This relaxing 45-minute facial includes a 3-step process:

  1. Cleanse & Peel – We perform hydradermabrasion (physical exfoliation) followed by a light chemical peel (chemical exfoliation) to clear away dead skin, oil, and other debris clogging your skin.
  2. Extract & Hydrate – Next, your provider uses the gentle HydraFacial suction tip to remove any debris and congestants stuck in the pores. Then, we use the Vortex-Fusion tip to deliver intense hydrating skin products.
  3. Infuse & Protect – Finally, we deliver additional antioxidants and peptides to promote skin health and extra glow.

We use HydraFacials to address:

  • Epidermal sun damage
  • Dermal sun damage (with regular treatments)

Microneedling

We know it sounds counterintuitive, but it turns out that injuring your skin (in a sterile environment, by a trained specialist) can have incredible rejuvenation effects! Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation technique where we use tiny (micro) needles to puncture the top layer of skin.

Besides breaking up areas of epidermal hyperpigmentation, these micro-injuries on your skin’s surface prompt your skin to produce more collagen and elastin in the area. Over time, this results in skin that’s more evenly toned, youthful, and bright.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend anywhere between 2 to 10 treatments over a period of multiple months to address your hyperpigmentation. Most of our patients achieve amazing results 3 to 4 months after their last treatment!

We use microneedling to address:

  • Sun damage
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Pitted or raised scars

LaseMD

Some light waves, like ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun, have extremely damaging effects on the skin. However, other forms of light, like lasers, offer powerful skin-rejuvenating benefits.

Through innovative, non-ablative laser technology, our LaseMD treatment creates micro-channels in the skin to boost collagen and elastin production. The end result is more glowing, youthful skin! Similar to microneedling, we create controlled damage in the tissue to break up areas of hyperpigmentation and encourage new, shiny skin to come to the surface.

While you can go about your normal activities, you may want to take a few days to a week of social downtime, depending on the intensity level of your LaseMD treatment plan. You’ll see the most improvement from your treatment after six months, as new collagen and elastin develop.

We use LaseMD to treat:

  • Melasma
  • Sun damage
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Pitted or raised scars
  • Birthmarks (Especially pigmented ones)

A note on birthmarks…

While birthmarks are not an issue that affects your skin health, prominent ones on the face or neck can make you feel self-conscious and in search of treatment.

Most birthmarks fall into two categories: vascular and pigmented. Like the name suggests, vascular birthmarks result from a malformation of blood vessels in an area of skin. Port wine stains, and hemangiomas fall in the vascular birthmark category. Examples of pigmented birthmarks include moles and café au lait spots.

To treat many birthmarks, we have to use methods that go deep into the skin’s layers where the hyperpigmentation lies. This makes light-based therapy the perfect option! With lasers, like LaseMD or Excel V, we can eliminate or significantly improve the appearance of port wine stains, hemangiomas, and café au lait spots.

Excel® V

Cutera designed their Excel V laser to treat 20 types of skin discoloration, so to call it the Holy Grail of hyperpigmentation treatments might be appropriate.

Excel V is the most advanced laser for treating a variety of skin conditions, including redness, broken capillaries, rosacea, larger vessels, and more. It also fights the signs of sun damage, including superficial and deep pigmentation, as well as scars. The Excel V laser specifically targets pigment abnormalities to give you drop-dead gorgeous skin.

It takes time for the full results to develop, but many patients see a significant improvement in their hyperpigmentation concerns after just one session! Though it packs a powerful punch, our patients don’t consider treatments with the Excel V laser to be painful. We take care to ensure your comfort every step of the way.

The Excel V laser addresses:

  • Sun damage
  • Pitted or raised scars
  • Birthmarks (especially vascular ones)
